If you've been casting about for a reason to venture beyond your terrace this weekend, Antibes has obligingly provided several.
The city is hosting a packed programme on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June, taking in free museum visits, contemporary art, environmental talks, live music and, because why not, a basketball tournament. It's the kind of weekend that makes you feel slightly guilty for having considered staying in.
The centrepiece is Antibes' participation in the European Archaeology Days, running at the Musée d'Archéologie from Saturday through Sunday. Free entry, guided visits, and the chance to feel considerably more cultured than you were on Friday. It's hard to argue with. The museum's ongoing programme explores the archaeological heritage of the region, which turns out to be rather more interesting than most people expect.
Elsewhere across the city, contemporary art exhibitions and a programme of environmental talks round out a weekend that leans heavily into Antibes' quietly impressive cultural credentials. The basketball tournament, meanwhile, provides an option for those who prefer their Saturday afternoons slightly more aerobic.
Worth noting for diary purposes: this is also the calm before the storm. Antibes' Nuits Carrées festival kicks off on 18 June, four nights of outdoor music on the Esplanade du Pré des Pêcheurs, sea views included, ramparts as backdrop. One of the better things the Riviera does every summer.
Getting there is straightforward enough. The TER from Nice takes around 25 minutes. From Cannes, a civilised 15.
